Congratulations to nine Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) magnet schools and programs for earning the Magnet Schools of America 2016 National Merit Awards. Four schools received the Magnet Schools of Excellence award, and five schools and programs received the Magnet Schools of Distinction award from MSA, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools.
Receiving the Magnet Schools of Excellence, the top merit award given to a select group of magnet schools, are:
Broward County Public Schools Staff, Students from Lake Forest Elementary School and Walker Elementary School, John Lloyd Young and Carla Dirlikov
Tony Award-Winning Actor John Lloyd Young and International Opera Singer Carla Dirlikov visit Lake Forest Elementary and Walker Elementary to meet with teachers and principals, visit classes, share music techniques with students and film a special talent show video for the White House.

Students at Deerfield Beach Middle School Get Special Opportunity to Learn About the Tuskegee Airmen
Local media are invited to Deerfield Beach Middle School March 9-12 to see the positive influence on students as they visit the CAF Red Tail Squadron’s RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit, a mobile theater that travels the country to inspire young people through the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen – America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel.

Stranahan High grad helps impoverished in Honduras

We’ve all seen the ripple effects that a great school can have. During my recent travels to Honduras, I saw the ripple from a Ft. Lauderdale high school and its potential to lift thousands of people out of poverty.
We often talk in the education world about “turning a school around.” It’s shorthand for what is often the work of a charismatic educator who leads reforms that result in vastly improved teaching and learning.
